In this vibrant program from the missions of Bolivia and Peru, Juilliard415 explores the intersections of global and local Baroque. In the mid-eighteenth century, Jesuit missionaries brought Corelli, Vivaldi, Locatelli, and others to their new missions in Chiquitos, in southeastern Bolivia. Versions of these pieces survive today in the archives of the Chiquitanía, alongside anonymous sonatas and motets, some in the indigenous languages of the region.

Our program traces the arrival of European religious music and its transformation inside the church, and then turns to popular music outside the church with some of the surviving indigenous dances and songs of Peru from the Codex Martinez Compañón, alongside folk-influenced songs by Juan de Araujo & Tomás de Torrejón.

‘…a remarkable depth of artistry from students in the Juilliard historical performance program.’
