Thomas Dunford Archlute

Our gala celebration features a recital from the world’s most in-demand lutenist, Thomas Dunford. Called the “Eric Clapton of the lute” by BBC Music Magazine, Dunford will present music for solo archlute to a special audience of just 100 of our most loyal patrons.

Founding director of the elite Jupiter Ensemble, Dunford has gained worldwide recognition with recitals from Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center, as well as at major European festivals and venues in South America, India, China, and Japan.

Come celebrate 50 years of Music Before 1800 with food and drink, auctions and prizes, games and toasts, and stay for a rare chance to hear Dunford up close, with music by Dowland, Marais, Bach, Satie, and others.

This year’s honoree is one of early music’s most decorated scholars and educators, Ellen Rosand.
Graduate of Vassar, Harvard and NYU, Ellen became chair of the Music Department at Yale while writing several defining monographs on Monteverdi and early opera in Venice. She has produced countless articles as a musicologist while editing expansive volumes on Cavalli, Barbara Strozzi, and the 14-book Garland Library of the History of Western Music.
Former President and Journal Editor of the American Musicological Society, Vice-President of the International Musicological Society, and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Ellen’s career has furthered our culture’s understanding of the birth of opera like few others. A passionate educator, her courses at Yale and Rutgers have produced thousands of early music fans around the world.

‘There’s no mistaking the signature stamp: Thomas Dunford was here.’
